German Corvette FGS Braunschweig Visits Riga as Part of NATO Naval Cooperation

From July 7 to 9, the German Navy’s corvette FGS Braunschweig made a scheduled port call in Riga, Latvia. The visit was coordinated with the Latvian Naval Forces (NBS Jūras spēki – National Armed Forces, Naval Forces) and underscores ongoing operational cooperation among NATO maritime forces in the Baltic Sea region.

The presence of the German corvette in Riga aims to strengthen joint operational capabilities and maintain a continuous allied naval presence in the Baltic. Such activities enhance interoperability between NATO member states’ navies and improve readiness for coordinated response to emerging security challenges.

FGS Braunschweig is a K130-class corvette designed for coastal operations and participation in international missions. The vessel is equipped with advanced reconnaissance systems, missile armaments, and electronic warfare capabilities. It is one of the first series of Braunschweig-class corvettes commissioned by the German Navy since 2008.

This port visit fits into a broader framework of NATO naval cooperation in the Baltic Sea, which includes joint exercises, patrols, and initiatives aimed at strengthening regional maritime security.
