Germany expands military presence in Greenland: Arctic security as shared responsibility
During a visit to Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, German Deputy Defence Minister Nils Schmid announced Berlin’s intention to take on greater responsibility for Arctic security. According to Schmid, focusing solely on the Baltic Sea would be “short-sighted,” as the High North and the North Atlantic are increasingly crucial for NATO and European stability.

Over the weekend, the German replenishment vessel FGS Berlin docked in Nuuk for the first time. The ship is set to participate in Arctic naval exercises. A joint press conference was held aboard the Danish frigate HDMS Triton, with the participation of Greenland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Motzfeldt and Denmark’s Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen.
– The German Navy will temporarily deploy submarines, frigates and maritime patrol aircraft to Greenland in order to strengthen reconnaissance and deterrence capabilities, said Nils Schmid, underlining Berlin’s readiness to contribute to regional defence.
Germany’s move aligns with a wider security partnership involving Germany, Denmark, Canada and Norway, aimed at reinforcing defence across the northern Atlantic.
Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen described the visit as a continuation of allied solidarity, following the June visit of French President Emmanuel Macron, who had reassured Copenhagen and Nuuk of French support. Macron’s gesture was seen as a direct response to earlier claims over Greenland voiced by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
