Martyna Seroka Shines at ILCA 4 Youth Europeans in Puck

Polish sailor Martyna Seroka delivered a standout performance on day two of the ILCA 4 Youth European Championships and Open European Trophy in Puck, Poland. Finishing the day’s two races in 2nd and 3rd place respectively, she climbed to an impressive 8th overall – the top position among Polish athletes in the fleet.

- The starts were what I worried about most today, Martyna Seroka reflected post-race. - But once I settled in, I focused on my own plan. The wind was tricky, and a moment’s inattention could’ve cost me everything. I'm proud I stayed mentally sharp and pushed forward after yesterday's weaker results.

Sailing conditions on the Bay of Puck tested the fleet with gusty northeast winds and steep, choppy waves – ideal for exposing technical weaknesses and rewarding strategic discipline. For many competitors, this regatta marks a transition from the Optimist class into the physically and mentally demanding ILCA 4 circuit.

The event has drawn over 400 sailors from nearly 40 countries, including non-European delegations from Canada, Brazil, the U.S., and Mexico – reinforcing the global relevance of the ILCA 4 pathway. Despite the championship's European status, its scope reflects a growing appetite for high-level youth sailing experiences worldwide.

In the girls’ fleet, Turkey’s Derin Degisen currently holds the lead, with strong performances from Germany and Croatia just behind. Among the Polish squad, Nina Mirowska maintains a steady top-25 placement, while Patrycja Jałoszyńska, although further back overall, remains competitive in the U16 category.

In the boys’ division, the top four – Helias Gaviotis (Greece), Alberto Avanzini (Italy), Konstantinos Portosalte (Greece), and Erik Scheidt (Brazil) – are tied at the top of the leaderboard. Poland’s Jakub Pawlikowski, meanwhile, sits mid-fleet but remains a key contender in the U16 field.

From an industry perspective, the regatta offers more than elite youth competition. It also activates the full marine economy of the region. With support from the Polish Yachting Association and local authorities, the event has mobilized a wide range of maritime resources: from RIB fleets and support vessels to sail repair stations and mobile rigging workshops – a significant stimulus for local chandleries and service providers.

On shore, the regatta village blends education and entertainment. The PGE PolSailing initiative offers beginner sailing simulations for children, while Radio Nowy Świat broadcasts live from the marina. A dedicated app-based city game, TRAF, encourages visiting teams and spectators to explore Puck’s maritime heritage and support the local economy.

As weather conditions remain dynamic, race management faces the dual challenge of athlete safety and schedule efficiency. Saturday’s forecast suggests lighter breeze – a potential shake-up for heavier sailors.

The ILCA 4 Youth Europeans in Puck is more than just a championship; it’s a convergence of sport development, maritime training, and international exchange. For many young sailors, it is the first true step toward high-performance sailing – and for the marine industry, a clear signal of where the next generation is heading.
