Gas Leak at Westerplatte Terminal - Emergency Services Respond Swiftly in Port of Gdańsk
On Saturday afternoon, a gas leak occurred at the Westerplatte Ferry Terminal, located within the Port of Gdańsk. At approximately 12:30 PM local time, emergency services received a report of a damaged natural gas pipeline on the terminal grounds, prompting the evacuation of around 200 people and the immediate suspension of operations in the affected area.

Four fire and rescue units from the Gdańsk Municipal Fire Service (KM PSP Gdańsk) and three specialist units from the Port Fire Service “Florian” were dispatched to the site. Police officers from the Gdańsk Municipal Police also responded to secure the area and assist with coordinated evacuation efforts.
- At 12:30 PM, we received a report regarding a ruptured natural gas pipeline at the Westerplatte Terminal within the Port of Gdańsk. In response, four units from the Gdańsk Municipal Fire Service and three units from the Port Fire Service ‘Florian’ were deployed to the scene, said Brigadier Jacek Jakóbczyk, press officer for the Gdańsk Municipal Fire Service.
Upon arrival, firefighters used gas detection instruments to assess the risk and established a hazardous zone. Their measurements confirmed the presence of gas in the air, and an evacuation was ordered as a precautionary measure. The affected zone included parts of the terminal and surrounding facilities.
- Together with officers from the Gdańsk Municipal Police, we secured the perimeter. Using gas meters, firefighters designated a danger zone and proceeded to evacuate approximately 200 individuals from the terminal area and its immediate surroundings, Jakóbczyk added.
Technical gas emergency crews were immediately called in to contain the leak. Operations continued under safety protocols until the incident was brought under control.
- Specialized gas service technicians worked on mitigating the hazard. At approximately 2:23 PM, the leak was successfully stopped and the situation stabilized, confirmed Jakóbczyk.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The coordinated response ensured that evacuation and containment efforts were executed without additional risk to life or infrastructure.
The affected area remains under technical supervision, and operations in other parts of the Port of Gdańsk continued without disruption. Port authorities have announced an internal review of safety protocols and coordination procedures for construction and maintenance work near critical infrastructure.
