Equinor backs Ørsted’s DKK 6bn rights issue
Norwegian energy group Equinor has confirmed it will participate in Ørsted A/S’s planned rights issue, announced by the Danish company’s board on 11 August 2025. The move aims to strengthen Ørsted’s balance sheet amid ongoing offshore wind industry challenges.

Equinor will subscribe for new shares worth up to DKK 6 billion (approximately USD 939 million) to maintain its 10% ownership stake in Ørsted. Ahead of Ørsted’s next annual general meeting, Equinor will also nominate a candidate to the company’s board of directors.
- Our support reflects confidence in Ørsted’s fundamentals and the long-term competitiveness of offshore wind in selected markets, Equinor said in its statement.
The company stressed that the offshore wind sector is entering a phase of consolidation and will require new business models. A closer industrial and strategic collaboration between Equinor and Ørsted, it argues, could deliver value to shareholders of both companies.
Equinor added that it is closely following developments in the U.S. offshore wind market and will remain in dialogue with Ørsted.
The Norwegian group’s offshore wind portfolio currently comprises 0.4 GW of net installed capacity and 3.0 GW under development, with priority given to completing projects in North-West Europe and the Empire Wind 1 development in the U.S.
