Baltic Sea emerges as hotspot amid rising regional tensions
The Baltic Sea is increasingly becoming a focal point of security concerns in Europe, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo warned. According to Orpo, Russia’s war in Ukraine and escalating regional incidents are forcing Baltic states to remain vigilant.

- Too much has happened, and the conclusion is clear. We must stay alert, strengthen our own defense, and deepen cooperation with our neighbors, allies, and within the European Union, Orpo said, commenting on recent developments in the Baltic region.
In recent weeks, incidents have included Russian drones entering Polish territory, MiG fighter jets violating Estonian airspace, and drones appearing over airports in Copenhagen and Oslo.
Continuous Russian pressure
Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen noted that Russia’s military activity in the Baltic has been continuous and long-term.
- There is no dramatic change, although drones have given the security situation a new dimension, Häkkänen told Helsingin Sanomat.
According to Häkkänen, these actions are part of a broader hybrid campaign targeting the West.
- Russia has been conducting influence operations for 20 years, and after the war in Ukraine, it will likely intensify this activity, he said.
Strategic importance of the Baltic
Experts emphasize that the Baltic Sea holds strategic importance for both NATO and the European Union. Key shipping lanes, energy infrastructure, and transport connections run through the region, meaning any escalation or military incident directly affects regional security, maritime logistics, and port operations.
Finnish authorities are calling for closer cooperation among Baltic states in monitoring air and sea space, as well as the development of joint mechanisms to respond to hybrid threats.
