- These disruptions are most likely intentional, stated Sebastian Wigmo of the Swedish Maritime Administration, as quoted by Aftonbladet.

Although the irregularities currently pose no direct threat to navigational safety — with vessel crews utilizing a variety of positioning systems — the alert has been issued to prompt heightened vigilance among shipmasters operating in the affected region.

Sweden’s Armed Forces and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency have been notified of the issue.

Incidents of inaccurate GPS readings in the Baltic region have become more frequent following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. According to Maria Engqvist, an expert at the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI), such disruptions may be part of deliberate efforts by Russia to test the resilience and preparedness of Western nations.
