Efficient rescue operation in Port Gdańsk. Piorun crew in action again
On Thursday afternoon, a young roe deer fell into the waters of the port canal near Westerplatte Quay. The animal, clearly disoriented and struggling against the current and low temperature, was quickly spotted thanks to the Port of Gdańsk’s visual monitoring system.

The alert reached the ecological-rescue vessel Piorun, operated by Port Gdańsk’s response team, which immediately launched a recovery operation.
– We threw a rope around its antlers and gently guided it toward the quay wall. That allowed us to lead it to the edge and pull it out near the WOC terminal – said Janusz Makowski from the Piorun crew.
Although the animal initially ran off in the direction of Brzeźno, moments later it re-entered the canal – likely startled by the surrounding noise. Fortunately, Piorun was still on site. The team managed to lift the roe deer on board and safely relocate it to the greener area near Wisłoujście Fortress.
– Wild boars are actually more common in the canal. Earlier this year we managed to rescue one as well – added Tomasz Wachowski, skipper of Piorun.
The entire incident was observed and coordinated thanks to the Port of Gdańsk’s Rescue Center, which operates an advanced video surveillance and security management system. Once again, effective communication and rapid deployment made the difference.
This successful operation highlights not only the professionalism of Port Gdańsk’s maritime services, but also the importance of integrated port security infrastructure. Every life matters – and the Piorun team proves that every day.
