Polish Border Guard uncovers large-scale drug smuggling network using courier services

Proceedings have begun before the Regional Court in Gdańsk against three men aged between 20 and 30, arrested in Gdynia, Susz and Bochnia, accused of large-scale intra-EU drug smuggling from Spain to Poland. The case is the result of a year-long investigation conducted by officers of the Polish Maritime Border Guard under the supervision of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Gdańsk.

According to investigators from the Gdańsk Border Guard Unit, narcotics were shipped from Spain using international courier companies and collected in Poland from parcel lockers and retail pick-up points. The drugs were then distributed locally or transported to other regions of the country.

— Our officers secured eight shipments containing more than 12 kilograms of marijuana, hashish, cocaine and amphetamine — said Tadeusz Gruchalla from the press office of the Maritime Border Guard. — We also discovered narcotics disguised as chocolates, gummies and candies, packaged to resemble ordinary confectionery products.

A detailed analysis of seized digital evidence and courier records revealed that the operation was far more extensive. Investigators identified at least 52 previous shipments with a total weight exceeding 170 kilograms of narcotics, collected by the suspects over time. These findings led prosecutors to extend the charges.

Meanwhile, the Maritime Border Guard’s Operational and Investigative Group in Gdańsk is working to identify the criminal network operating in Spain that organized the shipments.

— Evidence related to the Spanish branch of the operation has been separated into a new investigation — Tadeusz Gruchalla explained. — Officers have already questioned numerous witnesses and traced financial flows through accounts held in both Polish and foreign financial institutions. A registered business entity in Poland was also used to conceal illicit proceeds.

Investigators have additionally uncovered similar drug-smuggling schemes involving shipments from other European countries. Three more suspects have been arrested in Piekary Śląskie, Częstochowa and Kościerzyna, two of whom have been placed in pre-trial detention. Further arrests are expected as the investigation continues.
