PORR has acquired a 50% stake in Moderna Construction, which operates a state-of-the-art precast concrete facility in Kartoszyno, northern Poland. The plant will serve as a central hub for the production of advanced concrete elements dedicated to port, offshore, and coastal protection projects.

Responding to infrastructure market demands

The launch of Moderna PORR reflects growing demand for efficient and scalable construction solutions across large infrastructure projects. Increasing cost pressures, workforce shortages, and the need to accelerate project delivery are driving the adoption of prefabrication technologies.

- For Moderna, partnering with a global construction leader confirms our strong capabilities and opens opportunities to expand into new market segments while increasing our participation in Poland’s infrastructure transformation. This transaction represents a natural step in the development of our holding, elevating our operational scale and enabling us to deliver the largest infrastructure, energy, railway, and industrial projects in Poland - said Adam Małaczek, CEO of Moderna Holding.

- The decision to establish Moderna PORR stems from our firm belief that prefabrication is the future of modern construction. As a general contractor, we consistently develop our operations based on innovative, efficient, and sustainable solutions that respond to current market challenges - said Piotr Kledzik, CEO of PORR S.A. - Equally important is our long-term commitment to investing in Poland, with a strong focus on supporting local communities, strengthening domestic supply chains, and creating stable jobs. We believe that building a strong, modern economy starts at the local level. Acquiring a 50% stake in the Kartoszyno facility was therefore a natural and consistent step aligned with our strategic objectives. We see this investment as part of a broader process that is already gaining momentum and whose further stages will soon become visible - he added.

Prefabrication critical for maritime sector

From a maritime industry perspective, concrete prefabrication plays an increasingly important role. Modern port and offshore projects require highly durable solutions capable of withstanding harsh marine conditions, including salinity, dynamic loads, wave action, and temperature fluctuations.

- Today’s port, offshore, and coastal protection projects require solutions resistant to aggressive marine environments, high dynamic loads, and long-term operation with minimized maintenance costs. Under such conditions, prefabricated reinforced and prestressed concrete elements prove particularly effective both technologically and logistically. Prefabrication is widely used in the construction of port quays, container terminals, offshore bases, marinas, breakwaters, locks, slipways, coastal reinforcements, and offshore energy infrastructure - said Mateusz Wyszecki, Director of the Moderna PORR plant in Kartoszyno.

Production in controlled factory conditions ensures high quality and repeatability of technical parameters - critical for hydrotechnical structures. Advanced concrete mixes with enhanced durability and tightness, often reinforced with mineral additives and specialized steel reinforcement, provide long-term performance even in the most demanding marine environments.

Faster delivery and greater efficiency

Prefabrication significantly reduces project timelines by enabling parallel production of structural elements and on-site preparatory works. Installation - often using heavy lifting equipment or floating technologies - can then be carried out quickly and predictably.

- Limiting the impact of weather conditions on the construction process results in fewer execution errors and greater predictability. Prefabrication reduces wet works and labor-intensive on-site processes. The production of elements runs in parallel with earthworks and foundation works, significantly shortening construction schedules - emphasized Adam Małaczek.

Additional benefits include reduced material waste, optimized logistics, and lower CO2 emissions, supporting the industry’s sustainability goals.

Expansion plans for kartoszyno facility

Moderna PORR has announced an intensive development program for its Kartoszyno plant. Planned investments include the expansion of production halls, acquisition of an additional concrete batching plant, development of machinery and logistics infrastructure, new internal transport systems, and the implementation of advanced digital design tools.

The company aims to establish one of the most advanced prefabrication hubs in northern Poland, capable of serving both internal group needs and external clients, including public investors, developers, and general contractors.

The partnership between Moderna and PORR reflects a broader trend toward the industrialization of construction and is expected to play a key role in delivering strategic investments for Poland’s maritime economy.
