Nine migrants die as boat capsizes in the Aegean Sea
At least nine migrants drowned on Thursday in the Aegean Sea off the Turkish coast after their boat capsized, the Turkish coast guard reported. Rescuers managed to save 25 people. A similar accident occurred in nearby Greek waters.

- The bodies of nine irregular migrants have been recovered, the coast guard announced, adding that search operations continued on Thursday afternoon in the area of the wreck. Rescuers successfully pulled 25 survivors from the water.
The incident took place in waters off the Turkish district of Ayvacik in the northwest of the country. Some beaches in the area are less than 10 km away from the Greek island of Lesbos.
On the same day, a similar disaster in nearby Greek territorial waters claimed at least seven lives, including three minors. According to the Greek port police, 23 people were rescued.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), nearly 400 migrants have been reported dead or missing in the Mediterranean in 2025.
