The opening of the final gala was styled on the Thursday dinners of King Stanisław August Poniatowski, and the actor playing the king cited the Gdynia investment as proof that Poland can build modern infrastructure for its shipbuilding industry. The shipyard took it in good humour, noting that never before in its history had a king commented on PGZ Stocznia Wojenna.

The base for Miecznik and Ratownik

The award-winning project is a series of investments that have transformed the Gdynia yard in recent years. Grupa NDI was general contractor for the successive stages, with a scope including the construction of a hull hall and a production hall and the development of shipyard infrastructure. Industria also took part in the project.

For PGZ Stocznia Wojenna the new facilities mean more than logistics. They are the infrastructure on which the construction of the Miecznik frigates for the Polish Navy and of the rescue ship under the Ratownik programme rests, the two most important naval shipbuilding programmes currently under way in Poland.

– This is a base without which it is hard to imagine running projects as complex as Miecznik or Ratownik. I thank Grupa NDI and Industria for delivering the investment and, above all, our employees involved in this project – said Marcin Ryngwelski, President of PGZ Stocznia Wojenna.

A strategic investment for the defence industry

Congratulating the shipyard and the teams involved, Grupa NDI described the investment as strategically important for the development of Poland's defence industry and for the Miecznik programme. A Defence Minister's award in a construction contest that usually honours public buildings, heritage sites and municipal projects signals that naval shipyard infrastructure is starting to be seen as an element of national security rather than merely a production facility.

The Modernisation of the Year & Building of the 21st Century contest has been held for 30 years and recognises the best refurbishments and new buildings in Poland. The Gdynia yard has joined the list of winners as one of the few defence industry plants in the contest's history.
