Baltica 2 completes installation of all 111 foundations on schedule

PGE and Ørsted have completed the installation of all 111 foundations at the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm. The campaign included 107 monopiles for wind turbines and four foundations for offshore substations, marking a major milestone in the construction of one of Poland’s largest offshore wind projects.

The monopile installation campaign was completed on schedule following months of detailed planning, logistics coordination and offshore operations. Van Oord carried out the installation work using two specialist vessels, Svanen and Aeolus, allowing the project team to increase installation capacity and maintain flexibility throughout the campaign.

The scale of the operation reflects the complexity of building a large offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea. The monopiles installed for Baltica 2 are up to 100 metres long, between 7.5 and 10.5 metres in diameter and weigh approximately 1,900 tonnes each.

Installing a single foundation required close coordination between manufacturing, transportation, offshore logistics and the preparation of individual installation locations. Operations also depended on the availability of specialist vessels and suitable weather and sea conditions.

Detailed planning helped maintain the schedule

Before the campaign began, the Baltica 2 project team assessed different installation scenarios and potential risks that could affect the progress of the works.

The planning process drew on Ørsted’s experience from offshore wind projects across several markets, combined with the specialist installation expertise of Van Oord. Particular attention was given to the installation sequence, component and vessel availability, logistics and the coordination of activities at sea.

This approach was designed to reduce the risk of downtime and give the project team sufficient flexibility to respond to changing offshore conditions.

The use of two installation vessels was an important part of that strategy. By combining the capabilities of Svanen and Aeolus, the teams were able to optimise the sequence of works and increase overall installation capacity.

- Completing the campaign on schedule shows how important thorough preparation and the management of dependencies between successive stages of work are in offshore construction. For Baltica 2, it was crucial to plan logistics, vessel operations and the installation sequence in a way that limited the risk of downtime while maintaining operational flexibility. This successful delivery was made possible by a strong team whose expertise, commitment and close collaboration kept the campaign on track. Experience gained by Ørsted through the delivery of more than 30 offshore wind projects across three continents helps us identify potential bottlenecks early and respond before they begin to affect the schedule of the entire project, said Ulrik Lange, Managing Director Baltica 2 at Ørsted.

111 foundations now in place

The completed campaign leaves all 111 foundations required for the offshore infrastructure in place.

Of the total, 107 monopiles will support the project’s wind turbines, while four foundations have been installed for the offshore substations.

The completion of the monopiles does not, however, mark the end of foundation-related work. Secondary steel structures and other equipment are now being installed on the completed foundations.

More than 400 additional units will ultimately be installed, including anode cages protecting the foundations against corrosion, boat landings for service vessels, and internal and external platforms. According to the project partners, around 75% of these components are manufactured in Poland, underlining the role of domestic suppliers in the development of the country’s offshore wind sector.

- Baltica 2 is currently the largest investment project being delivered by the PGE Group and one of the most important energy transition projects in Poland. Each stage completed on schedule confirms how crucial the consistent and comprehensive preparation of this undertaking is. Alongside the offshore work, we are intensively developing the onshore infrastructure, including the facilities required to transmit power from the wind farm to the National Power System, as well as the operations and maintenance base. These are key elements of the overall project that will ensure the efficient and safe operation of the offshore wind farm for decades to come, said Patrycja Kunc-Rozbój, Executive Vice President of the Management Board of PGE Baltica.

Van Oord highlights cooperation behind the campaign

For Van Oord, the completion of the monopile campaign represents another major offshore construction milestone. The company provided both its specialist vessels and project teams for the operation.

The combination of vessel capacity, offshore installation expertise and close coordination with Ørsted was particularly important in maintaining progress throughout the campaign.

Offshore construction continues

With all monopiles installed, construction of Baltica 2 is now moving into the next phase.

The installation of secondary steel structures on the foundations is expected to continue until the end of 2026. At the same time, preparations are progressing for the installation of the next major components of the wind farm.

Offshore substations and export cables are scheduled to be installed later this year. In 2027, the focus will shift towards the installation of the inter-array cables and wind turbines.

The offshore works are being carried out in parallel with the development of the project’s onshore infrastructure. This includes facilities required to transmit electricity generated offshore into Poland’s National Power System, as well as the operations and maintenance infrastructure needed once the wind farm enters service.

According to the current schedule, first power from Baltica 2 is expected in the first half of 2027, with full commercial operation planned by the end of 2027.

The completion of all 111 foundations therefore represents more than just the end of a major installation campaign. It marks the point at which the physical framework for the future wind farm is fully established offshore, paving the way for the installation of turbines, subsea cabling and the remaining electrical infrastructure.
