Autonomous surface vehicle Zimorodek: innovation by Gdańsk University of Technology students
Students from the SimLE scientific circle have unveiled their latest autonomous surface vehicle (ASV) – Zimorodek. This cutting-edge vessel, developed using 3D printing technology, is equipped with advanced sensors, high-performance onboard computers, and improved control algorithms.

Innovative project presented at Gdańsk University of Technology
The official premiere of Zimorodek took place at the academic club "Kwadratowa" at Gdańsk University of Technology (GUT). The event was attended by university representatives, including prof. Barbara Wikieł, vice-rector for student affairs, and prof. Mariusz Deja, dean of the faculty of mechanical engineering and ship technology. The presentation attracted numerous academic staff and students.
"Zimorodek is an autonomous floating unit capable of independently determining its route and executing tasks. It builds upon the proven architecture of its predecessor, yet features significant improvements, such as a 3D-printed hull and state-of-the-art vision systems," emphasized Igor Rusiecki, coordinator of the SeaSentinel program, under which ASV Zimorodek was developed.
Cutting-edge technologies and versatile applications
The vehicle is outfitted with the latest sensors, an enhanced power system, and more advanced data processing algorithms. Its modular design allows for integration with various mission-specific equipment, making it suitable for applications such as water quality monitoring and environmental research.
Zimorodek at RoboBoat 2025
Zimorodek has been designed with the prestigious RoboBoat 2025 competition in mind, scheduled to take place from March 3-9 in Sarasota, Florida. These international contests showcase the world's most innovative autonomous surface vehicles, with teams competing for top honors. Gdańsk University of Technology students will once again demonstrate their engineering prowess and cutting-edge solutions on the global stage.
During the unveiling event at "Kwadratowa," the SimLE team expressed gratitude to all contributors who helped bring the project to life. The technological and engineering support was provided by:
- Faculty of mechanical engineering and ship technology, alongside the faculty of electrical and control engineering, electronics, telecommunications, and informatics at GUT,
- GUT student government,
- KNW Gradient – responsible for developing the vehicle's control algorithms,
- KSTO Korab – with dr. eng. Cezary Żrodowski and Kazimierz Domalewski supporting the hull design and production,
- KNW Proces from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk – for creating the mission patch and ensuring the vehicle’s aesthetics.
The team also acknowledged the invaluable support of partners and sponsors, including AQ Wiring STG, Central Point, Sportis S.A., Kainos Polska, Solectroshop, 3Dconnexion, Cinestan, Pomorska Strefa Edukacyjna, Gdańsk Science and Technology Park, and Outerworld Engineering.
The maritime future of autonomous vessels
Zimorodek marks another significant step in the development of autonomous maritime technologies. By advancing their ASV projects, Gdańsk University of Technology students contribute to technological innovation in the maritime industry. Previous projects – ASV Perkoz and ASV Rybitwa – laid the foundation for the next generation of autonomous vessels with potential applications in industry, environmental monitoring, and search-and-rescue operations.
Looking ahead, the SimLE team is already planning future innovations in the field of autonomous surface systems. We eagerly anticipate their achievements at RoboBoat 2025 and beyond!
