Sweden supports NATO’s eastern flank security. JAS 39 Gripen fighters in Poland

Amid growing security threats in Central and Eastern Europe, Poland and Sweden are strengthening their military cooperation. For the first time, a Swedish squadron of JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets will be deployed outside the country as part of the NATO Air Policing mission. The aircraft will be stationed in Poland, from where they will patrol and defend the alliance’s airspace.

Strengthening NATO’s eastern flank

The General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces emphasized the significance of this cooperation, marking a new phase in defense relations between Warsaw and Stockholm.

- Amid growing security threats in Central and Eastern Europe, military cooperation between Poland and Sweden is becoming increasingly significant. Although our two countries have maintained close defense relations for years, we are now further tightening our cooperation thanks to Sweden’s membership in NATO – stated the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces.

The Swedish Armed Forces also highlighted the historical importance of this mission.

- For the first time, a Swedish squadron of JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets will be deployed in an allied country as part of NATO Air Policing. From a Polish base, our aircraft will patrol and safeguard the alliance’s airspace – announced the Swedish Armed Forces.

Poland thanks Sweden for its support

Polish Minister of National Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, expressed gratitude to Sweden for its contribution to regional security.

- Sweden has declared its support in protecting the airspace of NATO’s eastern flank. We will soon begin our joint mission. I sincerely thank Sweden for this decision, which is a testament to our solidarity and unity in the face of security threats – the minister stated on social media.

The deployment of Swedish fighter jets in Poland not only strengthens the region’s air defense but also sends a strong signal of NATO’s unity and readiness to respond to potential threats. It is also another step in Sweden’s integration into the alliance following its recent accession.

Thanks to this cooperation, NATO’s eastern flank security is significantly reinforced, and both Poland and Sweden reaffirm their roles as key partners in the alliance’s defense system.
