The project 207 base minesweepers are designed with reduced magnetic signatures, enabling them to detect and neutralize naval mine threats in Polish maritime zones and shipping lanes. These vessels form a critical component of Poland’s mine countermeasure (MCM) defense system, ensuring safe maritime routes and safeguarding underwater infrastructure.

On-time delivery of critical naval assets

The contract for the refurbishment of three base minesweepers—ORP Necko and ORP Nakło (both of project 207P) and ORP Mamry (project 207M)—was signed in June 2022 by the naval port command in Świnoujście. All vessels have now been delivered to the Polish navy ahead of the contractual deadlines.

- The timely, and even accelerated, delivery of yet another modernized vessel highlights our shipyard’s growing expertise and operational efficiency. Projects like this are essential for maintaining the operational capabilities of the Polish navy during the transition period before new vessels from the Miecznik and Ratownik programs enter service, emphasized Marcin Ryngwelski, CEO of PGZ naval shipyard.

Advanced overhaul and modernization

The scope of work included a comprehensive overhaul typical of major refits and dockyard maintenance, with a special focus on re-engining. The propulsion system was completely upgraded with modern MTU engines, ZF Friedrichshafen gearboxes, and Geislinger composite couplings. The power generation system was also modernized with Poweras generators.

Additional upgrades included the replacement of obsolete navigation and communication systems, as well as thorough hull and superstructure maintenance.

- We have kept our course and speed, and thanks to our team’s dedicated efforts, we have delivered ahead of schedule. ORP Mamry, following ORP Nakło and ORP Necko, is the third vessel that PGZ group-affiliated shipyards have provided to the Polish navy before the deadline. This achievement is a positive signal for future projects and a testament to our collective ability to enhance national security, stated a PGZ S.A. representative.

Strengthening Poland’s naval capabilities

The PGZ consortium reaffirms its readiness to continue replacing outdated Soviet-era propulsion systems across the Polish navy’s fleet. Leveraging its acquired expertise, established supply chains, and strong subcontractor partnerships, the consortium remains committed to modernizing Poland’s naval forces.

This successful project underscores PGZ’s strategic role in Poland’s defense industry, reinforcing its position as a key partner in naval modernization programs and future maritime security initiatives.
