Inauguration of the training year in the Polish Navy
Sailors from the 8th Coastal Defense Flotilla and the 3rd Ship Flotilla participated in numerous national and international exercises over the past year. The inauguration of the new training year provided an opportunity to summarize these activities. It is worth noting that they also carried out tasks unrelated to defense, such as flood relief efforts.

The New Year’s inauguration was attended by subunits from all units subordinate to the commander of the 8th Coastal Defense Flotilla (8FOW). Rear Admiral Piotr Sikora summarized the Flotilla’s activities in 2024, highlighting participation in operations such as "Zatoka" ("Gulf"), "Powódź" ("Flood"), and the regular involvement of 8FOW sailors in numerous national and international exercises.
The commander expressed gratitude for the dedication shown in accomplishing assigned tasks and for the training results achieved in the past year. He also outlined the Flotilla’s priorities for the near future:
- The year 2025 brings new challenges, but also reasons for pride and joy. We face not only intensive training and participation in exercises but also celebrations of important anniversaries. In terms of operational and training priorities, we will continue to engage in major national and international exercises. Our focus will be on honing skills in mine countermeasure operations, protecting critical infrastructure, and conducting missions in international waters—an essential effort in light of the increasing geopolitical tensions in the Baltic Sea region - said Rear Admiral Piotr Sikora.
2025 will also mark a continuation of the modernization of the Navy and the development of critical capabilities. The introduction of additional Kormoran II-class Multi-role Mine Countermeasure Vessels will result in significant structural changes within both Mine Sweeper Squadrons and further enhance our mine countermeasure and reconnaissance systems. This will considerably boost the combat potential of the 8th Flotilla. Modernizing infrastructure, both technical and training-related, will be a crucial aspect of our efforts to adapt the Flotilla to the requirements of modern warfare,”* Rear Admiral Piotr Sikora stated.
The assembly also provided an opportunity to recognize sports achievements from the past year. Commemorative trophies and medals were presented for athletic competitions, and the title of Athlete of the Year was awarded.
According to the Polish Navy, soldiers from the 2nd Transport and Mine-Laying Squadron were the best in the 2024 inter-unit sports competition held among 8FOW military units. The KPW Świnoujście unit and the 12th Mine Sweeper Squadron followed in second and third place, respectively. The competition spanned 14 sports disciplines, including military pentathlon, volleyball, futsal, orienteering, cross-country running, table tennis, tennis, rowing on ergometers, obstacle course completion (BTS and BTZ), weightlifting, and shooting.
In line with the Latin maxim “Mens sana in corpore sano” (“A healthy mind in a healthy body”) and the idea of promoting mass and universal sports participation, nearly 400 soldier-athletes were involved—bravo!
The title of 8FOW Athlete of the Year was awarded to Lt. Cmdr. Bartosz Ogórek, the current champion of the Polish Armed Forces and the Polish Navy in swimming.
The inauguration of the training year takes place as a ceremonial assembly of subunits, followed by the commencement of activities. Traditionally, it also includes inaugural lectures addressing topics of particular importance for various areas of activity in the year ahead.
