Windsurfer entangled in fishing nets off Ustka. Rapid SAR response prevents potential tragedy
Maritime rescue units were dispatched after a windsurfer became trapped in fishing nets near the Polish coast of Ustka. According to the Maritime Search and Rescue Service, the incident could have escalated into a life-threatening situation within minutes, highlighting the growing safety challenges in areas where recreational activity overlaps with fishing operations in the Baltic Sea.

Dangerous incident in nearshore waters
The incident occurred off the coast of Ustka, where a windsurfer became entangled in fishing nets deployed in the nearshore zone. The athlete lost the ability to maneuver freely and was unable to return safely to shore.
Units of the Morska Służba Poszukiwania i Ratownictwa were immediately dispatched after the emergency call was received, launching a coordinated rescue operation in the area.
According to Sebastian Kluska, Director of the Maritime Search and Rescue Service, incidents involving fishing gear are always treated as potentially critical, even when weather conditions appear relatively calm.
Rescue personnel emphasized that the windsurfer’s own preparedness played a major role in the successful outcome of the operation. The man was properly equipped for being at sea, carried a waterproof-secured mobile phone, and was able to contact rescue services himself, providing crucial information about his position and the nature of the emergency. According to rescuers, this type of preparation often proves decisive for response time and the overall effectiveness of maritime rescue operations.
- Any situation in which a person becomes immobilized in fishing gear has the potential to turn critical very quickly. At sea, exhaustion, hypothermia, and panic can develop within minutes, and even experienced water users may suddenly lose the ability to act independently, Sebastian Kluska emphasizes.
Fishing gear remains a major hazard for recreational users
After reaching the scene, rescue crews secured the area and began freeing the windsurfer from the fishing nets and associated equipment. Preliminary reports indicate that the operation ended successfully and the individual did not suffer serious injuries.
However, maritime authorities underline that incidents involving fishing gear continue to represent a growing safety challenge in the Baltic region, particularly in areas with increasing recreational traffic.
- In coastal zones, fishing activity and recreational use of the sea often overlap. Nets, ropes, and fishing markers can be difficult to identify, especially in changing weather conditions, waves, or reduced visibility. For windsurfers and kitesurfers, this may become an extremely serious hazard, says the Director of MSPiR SAR.
Growing traffic and operational pressure in the Baltic Sea
Experts point out that the Polish Baltic coast is experiencing steadily increasing maritime traffic, both commercial and recreational. Water sports, coastal tourism, and seasonal marine activity are intensifying across many nearshore areas traditionally used by local fisheries.
This overlap creates new operational and safety challenges for maritime services and coastal authorities.
According to SAR officials, awareness and preparation remain the most effective tools in preventing such incidents.
- Our units are fully prepared to conduct this type of rescue operation, but prevention remains the key element of maritime safety. Responsible trip planning, awareness of local conditions, and cautious behavior on the water significantly reduce the risk of similar incidents, Sebastian Kluska notes.
Maritime authorities urge caution
Rescue services remind all recreational users of the Baltic Sea that rapid emergency notification and accurate location reporting are crucial during incidents at sea. Even situations that initially appear manageable can escalate rapidly under maritime conditions.
MSPiR SAR is also urging water sports enthusiasts to exercise particular caution in areas where fishing operations are conducted or where submerged fishing equipment may be present beneath the surface.
