Spain prepares centenary celebrations for iconic training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano

Spain’s Congress of Deputies has formally backed preparations for the 100th anniversary of the launch of the naval training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano, scheduled to take place in 2027. The decision, adopted by the Defence Committee with cross-party support, marks the beginning of a coordinated national effort to organise commemorative events honouring one of the most emblematic vessels in the Spanish Navy.

Cross-party backing for a maritime landmark

The non-legislative proposal was approved with support from Spain’s main parliamentary groups, including the People’s Party (PP), PSOE, Sumar, and Vox. The unanimous backing highlights the vessel’s unique status as both a military training platform and a symbol of national maritime heritage.

During the committee session, lawmakers emphasised the ship’s historical, cultural, and educational significance, describing it as one of the cornerstone symbols of Spain’s naval tradition.

Nearly a century of training at sea

Commissioned in 1927, Juan Sebastián de Elcano has served continuously as the Spanish Navy’s principal sail training vessel. Designed as a barque-rigged tall ship, it has trained generations of naval cadets, known as guardiamarinas, in seamanship, navigation, leadership, and life at sea.

Beyond its training role, the vessel has long functioned as a floating ambassador for Spain. Over the course of its service, it has completed numerous global deployments, visiting ports across all continents and representing Spain in international naval diplomacy.

A global ambassador of Spanish maritime tradition

Often referred to as a “floating academy,” the ship combines rigorous naval instruction with diplomatic outreach. Its long-distance training voyages have made it a familiar presence in major ports worldwide, strengthening Spain’s maritime profile and reinforcing cultural and institutional ties with host nations.

The vessel’s voyages typically span several months and include multiple international port calls, making it one of the most active and visible sail training ships in operation globally.

Framework for nationwide commemorations

The approved initiative calls for the development of a broad commemorative programme for 2027, coordinated between national, regional, and local authorities, as well as naval and cultural institutions.

Planned activities are expected to include:

  • cultural and historical exhibitions,
  • official state and naval ceremonies,
  • public outreach events involving the ship itself,
  • educational programmes aimed at younger generations.

Ports and cities historically linked to the vessel are expected to play a key role in hosting events, underlining the ship’s long-standing connection with Spain’s coastal maritime communities.

Maritime heritage and strategic messaging

Lawmakers stressed that the centenary should serve not only as a historical commemoration but also as an opportunity to reinforce Spain’s international projection and maritime identity. The initiative highlights values traditionally associated with naval service, including discipline, endurance, and public service.

The celebrations are also expected to contribute to wider efforts to promote maritime culture and defence awareness, particularly among younger audiences with limited exposure to seafaring traditions.

A century of continuous service

As it approaches its centenary, Juan Sebastián de Elcano remains one of the world’s longest-serving active tall ships. Its continued operational role within the Spanish Navy underscores its dual function: as a training platform for future officers and as a living symbol of Spain’s enduring maritime tradition.

The 2027 celebrations are expected to place the vessel at the centre of both national and international attention, reaffirming its role as one of the most recognisable ambassadors of Spain at sea.
