Royal Decree 1226/2026, issued on 26 May, grants the centenary of the legendary Spanish Navy sail training vessel Juan Sebastián de Elcano special public-interest status. The designation ensures institutional backing for a series of commemorative, cultural, and international outreach activities scheduled between March 2027 and August 2028.
Launched on 5 March 1927 and commissioned on 29 February 1928, Elcano has served for nearly a century as a core training platform for officer cadets of the Spanish Navy (Armada Española). Beyond its educational mission, the vessel has played a key diplomatic role, visiting ports worldwide and acting as a floating ambassador of Spain.
Over its operational lifetime, the ship has sailed millions of nautical miles and visited numerous countries, earning a reputation as one of the most respected sail training ships globally. The centenary programme will include port calls, public exhibitions, and outreach initiatives aimed at strengthening Spain’s maritime identity and international presence.
