Rockfin between the atom and offshore. How a Pomeranian company entered the first league of the energy transition

In Poland's energy transition debate, most of the attention usually goes to the big names associated with offshore wind, nuclear power and large-scale energy. They are the ones appearing at conferences, signing intergovernmental agreements and becoming the faces of strategic investments. In the shadow of these giants, however, operates a group of companies without which no power unit, LNG terminal or offshore industrial infrastructure could function. Rockfin belongs to this group. A company that has for years developed away from the public spotlight, while consistently building competences in sectors that demand the highest technical and quality standards. Today, it is precisely these competences that are beginning to determine a company's position in the new energy landscape.

- The energy transition is not built solely on spectacular investments and big brands - says Michał Wróblewski, CEO of Rockfin. - Its foundation is technology, engineering competence and reliable systems supporting the operation of the entire infrastructure. For more than 30 years we have been developing exactly such solutions, responsible for the safety and operational continuity of key industrial and energy installations.

For years, the Pomeranian company remained outside the mainstream of media interest. It does not build nuclear reactors, erect offshore wind towers or manufacture turbines. And yet it is present practically everywhere the energy sector becomes more technologically complex, more demanding in terms of safety and more critical for the state.

It is in such areas that the new position of Polish industry is being forged today.

A quiet specialisation

Rockfin belongs to a category of companies that are difficult to describe in a single simple sentence. Formally, it is an engineering and manufacturing company that designs and integrates auxiliary systems for various sectors of industry and energy. In practice, this means a very broad range of competences: from oil and fuel systems for rotating machinery, through cooling, power supply, filtration and control systems, all the way to complete process modules for the oil and gas sector, offshore, hydrogen technologies, heat pumps and nuclear power.

It is an activity that stays outside the media spotlight, yet forms the foundation of modern industrial and energy infrastructure. Today's energy sector rests not only on the sources of energy themselves, but on a vast number of systems supporting their operation. A turbine or any other rotating machine will not run reliably and continuously without a proper lubrication system. A generator will not reach the required efficiency without stable cooling parameters. An LNG installation will not pass the required acceptance procedures without precise automation and safety systems.

It is in this segment that the Pomeranian company has built its capabilities over the years, creating solutions for infrastructure operating under high operational risk and very stringent technical requirements. As a result, the strong professionalism gained on offshore and fuel-sector projects can now be transferred to new segments of the energy market.

In recent years, the company has consistently developed its professional capabilities as a global leader in the integration of industrial auxiliary systems, moving towards the delivery of its own comprehensive solutions for the hydrogen technology and heat pump sectors. It is a significant shift, showing how part of Polish industry is maturing to operate in the most demanding segments of global energy.

Offshore as a school of survival

Before Rockfin began to be associated with nuclear power, its natural environment was the oil and gas sector and offshore infrastructure. That experience is proving invaluable today.

The offshore industry has for decades operated to far more rigorous standards than most onshore sectors. Systems work in a demanding marine environment, often without the possibility of rapid service intervention, under enormous pressure for safety and reliability. A design error or a failure can mean multimillion losses and disruption to entire installations.

Companies that learned to operate under such conditions have gained knowledge that is particularly valuable in the new energy economy. That is why the experience acquired on LNG projects, offshore platforms and process installations is now naturally flowing into nuclear power and offshore wind.

Contrary to popular belief, the latter is not merely a shipbuilding or construction sector. It also involves an enormous amount of advanced automation, hydraulic systems, cooling systems, energy infrastructure and process solutions. The more extensive offshore wind farms become, the more important an industrial base capable of delivering highly reliable components will be. Rockfin appears to understand this direction well.

The company does not position itself as a manufacturer of foundations or components, but as a supplier of the technological backbone for the new energy sector. This, however, is often a more profitable and stable segment of the market.

The atom needs more than a reactor

Even more interesting, however, is Rockfin's position in the nuclear sector. In Poland's public debate, nuclear power is often presented in simplified terms: as a choice of a specific technology or a specific supplier for the construction of a power plant. The reality looks entirely different.

A modern nuclear power plant is a giant industrial organism made up of tens of thousands of components and auxiliary systems. The reactor itself is only part of the entire infrastructure.

Of enormous importance is the so-called balance of plant - everything that allows the power plant to generate energy in a stable and safe manner: turbine systems, cooling, oil installations, safety systems, control modules and auxiliary equipment.

In this area, Rockfin has been marking its presence ever more clearly for several years, developing competences related to the supply of auxiliary systems and infrastructure for the nuclear-grade sector. It is precisely this segment of the market that may become one of the most important directions for the company's growth in the coming years, and one in which Rockfin is taking an active part.

It is a costly, time-consuming process with a high barrier to entry. In nuclear power, manufacturing experience alone is not enough. What is required includes quality certifications and procedures compliant with rigorous standards. For many companies, this is a threshold they cannot cross.

Rockfin went down this road relatively early, which means it can now participate in international nuclear projects not as a local second-choice supplier, but as an entity with real references and experience.

- Nuclear power requires the highest quality standards, full traceability and an organisational culture centred on safety. We have been investing in these competences for years, which allows us to participate in nuclear projects on the international market - explains the company's CEO. That is a fundamental difference.

Polish industry in the global supply chain

In recent months, politicians have frequently declared that the construction of nuclear power plants in Poland is to be a stimulus for domestic industry. The problem is that local content in nuclear power does not come from declarations. Wanting to participate in a nuclear project is not enough. Appropriate skills and references are also required.

Rockfin began this process much earlier than most of the market. In practice, this means that Polish industry today has a chance to participate not only in the construction of domestic nuclear units, but also in the global supply chain for new nuclear projects.

This is particularly important in the context of the coming investment boom. Europe, the United States and parts of Asia are returning to nuclear power for often pragmatic reasons. Listed in one breath are: energy system stability, security of supply and decarbonisation, which are beginning to prevail over the political disputes of a decade ago.

- Polish companies can play a significant role in global energy projects, but this requires years of investment in know-how, quality and certification - points out Wróblewski. - Competences are built over years, which is why the consistent development of a presence in international supply chains is so important.

In parallel, the SMR market - small modular reactors - is developing. Although there is still plenty of marketing noise around them, one fact remains beyond dispute. If the technology reaches commercial scale, an extensive industrial base will be needed, capable of producing modules and systems in series, to the highest quality standards.

It is here that companies like Rockfin may play a greater role than their media recognition would suggest.

The energy transition is no longer just green

Rockfin's activity clearly illustrates another significant trend: the energy transition increasingly bears little resemblance to a simple story about renewable energy sources. The new energy system is becoming a hybrid.

Alongside offshore wind comes LNG as a transition fuel. Alongside hydrogen - nuclear power. Alongside renewables - large-scale energy storage and industrial infrastructure stabilising the grid.

In practice, this means growing demand for companies able to integrate different technologies and operate at the intersection of multiple sectors. Rockfin appears to be exactly such a case.

On the one hand, the company retains strong industrial competences typical of conventional energy and the fuel sector. On the other, it is developing solutions related to hydrogen, heat pumps, new fuels and advanced automation.

This matters, because the future energy market will probably not belong to companies specialised in a single technology. The winners may be those who can operate across sectors.

- The future energy mix will be based on the coexistence of many technologies. We see our role as an integrator of solutions for different market segments, from conventional and nuclear energy to hydrogen, offshore and modern industrial systems - says the CEO of Rockfin.

Pomerania as a centre of the new energy sector

The geography is no accident either. Pomerania is increasingly becoming one of the most important centres of the energy transition in Central Europe. Offshore wind in the Baltic, LNG terminals, a nuclear power plant, the development of installation ports, hydrogen projects and the modernisation of transmission infrastructure are creating a new industrial ecosystem.

In this context, companies like Rockfin may prove more important than many high-profile energy startups.

Because ultimately, the energy transition will not happen at the level of PowerPoint presentations or conference declarations. It will happen in production halls, design offices and plants capable of delivering real components for critical infrastructure.

It is here that the question of Polish industry's place in the new energy economy is being decided today.

Between ambition and reality

Of course, many question marks still hang over the entire sector. Poland's energy transition remains regulatorily unstable. Offshore projects are developing more slowly than assumed just a few years ago. The nuclear programme is still more at the organisational than the execution stage. The SMR market has yet to pass a real economic test. All of this means that industrial companies, too, are operating today under conditions of considerable uncertainty.

At the same time, it is precisely now that the capabilities are being built which, in a few years, may determine the position of entire regions and sectors of the economy.

Rockfin is an interesting example of this process. Not because it has suddenly become a Polish champion, as politicians like to say, but because it demonstrates a more realistic model of industrial development. Without grand slogans, but with a consistent entry into the most demanding segments of global energy. And that may prove far more valuable than yet another marketing tale of a green revolution.
