Rescue operation in Brzeźno. Early start of an intense season for Maritime Search and Rescue Service?

Although the long May weekend is still a week away, the first serious maritime incidents have already occurred. In the area of Gdańsk Brzeźno, an emergency involving a person reported missing in the water was initiated.

The response included the SAR-1500 lifeboat “Wiatr” and unit R-20 from the rescue vessel “Kapitan Poinc”. Search operations at sea were suspended after information was received that the casualty had been located and recovered to shore. Immediate resuscitation was undertaken on site by the Emergency Medical Services.

- The operational season for maritime rescuers effectively starts earlier than many assume, although in reality it runs year-round - says Sebastian Kluska, Director of the Maritime Search and Rescue Service (MSPiR SAR). - We strongly urge caution and responsibility. The sea, even in fair weather conditions, remains a demanding and unforgiving environment.

Rescuers also remind that with the first warmer days, the number of interventions traditionally increases, and safety at the coast largely depends on responsible behaviour of beachgoers. Importantly, lifeguard services are not yet fully operational, while risk-taking behaviour in coastal waters continues to be a recurring issue reflected in annual statistics.
