Hybrid propulsion concept

The propulsion system is based on two azimuth thrusters driven by permanent magnet electric motors. Electrical energy is supplied by four generator sets operating on 100% biodiesel.

This configuration allows for flexible load management and ensures that generating units operate within optimal efficiency ranges, resulting in reduced fuel consumption and improved overall energy performance.

Battery system as peak-load support

A dedicated onboard energy storage system has been integrated to handle peak power demand. By smoothing load fluctuations, the batteries enable the gensets to maintain stable and efficient operation.

Importantly, the design already incorporates a scalable architecture, allowing for a future upgrade of the battery capacity by a factor of approximately 15. This would enable full electric operation under suitable operational profiles.

Designed for future energy transition

Rather than being a static hybrid solution, the NSD 85 CFd has been conceived as an adaptable platform. The vessel is structurally and electrically prepared for progressive electrification, aligning with long-term regulatory and environmental trends in European ferry transport.

Principal particulars

The ferry measures 83.5 metres in length and 17.25 metres in beam, accommodating up to 253 passengers and crew, 85 passenger vehicles and 6 trucks. Service speed is 12 knots, with a deadweight of 650 tonnes.
