First turbine installed at Nordseecluster A as Germany’s offshore mega-project takes shape

Germany’s offshore wind sector has reached another significant milestone. RWE and Norges Bank Investment Management have successfully installed the first V236-15.0 MW turbine at Nordseecluster A, the initial phase of a large-scale offshore wind complex that will eventually deliver 1.56 GW of installed capacity.

The project is located approximately 50 kilometres north of the island of Juist in the German North Sea and represents one of the most ambitious offshore energy investments currently underway in Europe.

Giant turbines for the next generation of offshore wind

Nordseecluster A will consist of 44 V236-15.0 MW turbines supplied by Vestas. With a rotor diameter of 236 metres and a rated capacity of 15 MW, the model ranks among the world’s most powerful commercially deployed offshore wind turbines.

Installation activities are expected to continue throughout 2026, with grid connection and commercial operation of the 660 MW project scheduled for early 2027.

A 1.56 GW offshore wind hub

Nordseecluster is being developed in two phases. The first phase, Nordseecluster A, will provide 660 MW of capacity, while Nordseecluster B will add another 900 MW and is expected to enter operation in early 2029.

Once completed, the entire complex will reach 1.56 GW of installed capacity and generate approximately 6.5 TWh of electricity annually, enough to supply the equivalent of around 1.6 million households.

The project is jointly owned by RWE, which holds a 51% stake, and Norges Bank Investment Management, which owns the remaining 49%.

Confidence returns to the offshore sector

The installation of the first turbine comes at a crucial moment for the offshore wind industry. Across Europe, developers have faced rising financing costs, inflationary pressures and supply chain disruptions. Despite these challenges, major projects continue to move forward, demonstrating long-term confidence in offshore wind as a strategic pillar of Europe’s energy transition.

Nordseecluster also highlights a broader industry trend: larger turbines capable of producing more electricity with fewer installations, helping developers improve efficiency while reducing overall project complexity.

Implications beyond the North Sea

While the project is located in German waters, its significance extends far beyond the North Sea. Offshore markets across the Baltic region, including Poland, are closely watching the progress of large-scale developments such as Nordseecluster.

As Baltic Sea countries accelerate their offshore ambitions, projects of this scale provide valuable experience in installation, logistics, supply chains and grid integration—areas that will be critical for the next generation of European offshore wind farms.
