Energa Operator secures another National Recovery Plan loan: over 300 million zloty for grid digitalisation

Energa Operator, part of the Gdańsk-based Energa Group, has secured further financing from Poland's National Recovery Plan (KPO): more than 300 million zloty (around €70 million) for the digitalisation and development of smart energy infrastructure. The agreement was signed with Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (BGK), Poland's state development bank. The investment is intended to improve the reliability of energy supply and to prepare the grid for the challenges of the energy transition.

The loan comes from KPO funds under the "Loan for Digitalisation" instrument and covers the refinancing of investments carried out up to 2035. It can cover up to 100 per cent of a project's eligible costs, with disbursements made in line with the progress of the work.

The financing will go towards the modernisation, digitisation and digitalisation of energy infrastructure, including the roll-out of smart meters and smart-grid management systems. This is expected to allow, among other things, faster fault detection, better management of energy flows, a reduction in network losses and smoother connection of new renewable energy sources. Part of the funds will also support security systems and IT and telecommunications infrastructure, which the company links to the growing importance of cybersecurity.

A digital grid as a matter of resilience

According to Magdalena Kamińska, CEO of Energa SA, the modern "grid of the future" needed to deliver the energy transition is not only about expanding and modernising infrastructure, but also about an advanced digital layer that strengthens the resilience of the system. The company is currently carrying out the largest investment plan in the group's history in its distribution network, having secured its first KPO funds a year earlier.

Prof. Marta Postuła, First Vice-President of BGK, highlights the strategic dimension of the agreement. She notes that digital transformation is now inseparable from the energy transition, industrial competitiveness and national security, and that the energy sector constitutes critical infrastructure. On this view, the stability and cybersecurity of individual parts of the system remain crucial for economic development.

Robert Świerzyński, CEO of Energa Operator, points out that the company already relies on digital solutions such as a SCADA/ADMS network management system, which mirrors the distribution infrastructure digitally, and a measurement database fed by data from more than three million remote meters installed across the network. The new financing is meant to accelerate the roll-out of further solutions that increase the security of supply.

A pillar of a long-term investment programme

Access to financing on competitive terms strengthens Energa Operator's ability to deliver its ambitious investment programme and lets it diversify its sources of capital, which it also raises from non-tariff funds. This allows the company to limit its exposure to volatile market debt costs and to keep greater flexibility in planning the multi-year modernisation of the network.

KPO funds are one of the financial pillars of Energa Operator's investment programme, which aims to develop modern, smart and resilient energy infrastructure. The total value of the investments planned for 2025–2035 exceeds 40 billion zloty (more than €9 billion), of which the company has so far secured around 9.4 billion zloty from KPO.
