Between deterrence and maritime security. The global activity of the Marine nationale
In recent days, the Marine nationale has once again demonstrated its capacity to sustain multi-theatre operations across strategically vital maritime regions. From the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean to the Gulf of Guinea and the Indo-Pacific, French naval forces continue to balance hard-power projection with maritime security and cooperative engagement.

In the broader Middle East and Indian Ocean area, a French multi-mission frigate remains deployed under the EU-led Operation Aspides, contributing to the protection of commercial shipping routes. With persistent asymmetric threats targeting maritime traffic, the role of naval escorts and autonomous situational awareness has become increasingly critical to ensuring freedom of navigation and safeguarding global trade flows.
Simultaneously, in Beirut, France continues to invest in regional naval partnerships through training initiatives involving the Lebanese Armed Forces. Officer cadets embarked aboard a French frigate participated in a wide spectrum of onboard and operational activities, ranging from bridge watchkeeping and maneuver training to live-fire drills and damage control exercises. Such engagements underline France’s commitment to strengthening interoperability and fostering long-term security cooperation in the Levant.
At the core of France’s maritime posture remains its carrier strike capability, centered around the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle. Operating in the Eastern Mediterranean, the carrier strike group continues to conduct air defense, reconnaissance, and deterrence missions. The embarked air wing maintains a sustained operational tempo across the Mediterranean basin, the Levant, and the Black Sea region, contributing to the protection of Cyprus airspace and reinforcing NATO’s eastern flank monitoring efforts.
Joint training activities further highlight the importance of allied integration, as demonstrated by recent interoperability flights conducted with Hellenic Air Force F-16 fighters. These engagements enhance coordination and readiness in an increasingly complex regional security environment.
Operationally, the French Navy has also showcased advanced at-sea logistics capabilities. During a replenishment-at-sea evolution, the successful catapult launch of an E-2C Hawkeye marked a significant milestone, confirming the ability to sustain full-spectrum air operations even under constrained logistical conditions. This capability reflects a high level of technical proficiency and operational maturity within the carrier strike group.
Beyond high-intensity operational theaters, France maintains a continuous presence in the Gulf of Guinea through Operation Corymbe. A high seas patrol vessel conducted coordinated activities with regional partners, including Ghanaian naval units, focusing on fisheries enforcement and maritime security. Supported by a Falcon 50 maritime patrol aircraft, these operations illustrate a comprehensive approach combining naval and aerial assets to address non-traditional maritime threats.
In the Indo-Pacific, activities in French Polynesia include amphibious training and preparations for the Aquarius 26.2 mission. These efforts aim to strengthen rapid response capabilities and deepen cooperation with regional partners in safeguarding maritime resources.
Taken together, the current operational footprint of the Marine nationale underscores its enduring role as a globally deployed naval force. By combining deterrence, maritime security, and international cooperation, France continues to assert its presence across key sea lines of communication and strategically significant regions worldwide.
